President Ma Ying-jeou has spoken about the events in Honduras for the first
time since Sunday's coup ... saying that he still plans to visit the country,
but that such a visit will have to take place at what he described as a
"suitable time."

Ma says he believes ties between Taipei and Honduras remain solid ... and
that he has asked Taiwan's envoy to Honduras to continue to monitor the
situation in the country.

Ma says he has also asked diplomatic mission to Honduras to make sure of the
safety of both its staff and Taiwanese nationals in the country.

However ... Ma did not say whether or not he has asked diplomatic staff to
meet with members of Honduras' new government.

Ma will attend the inauguration of Panama's President-elect -- Ricardo
Martinelli -- tomorrow, his first stop during his overseas trip.

The president's planned visit to Honduras was cancelled due to continued
unrest in the country ... meaning that Ma will now only visit Panama and
Nicaragua.

Ma plans to hold talks in Nicaragua aimed at boosting diplomatic ties and
expanding trade and economic cooperation.

The president scheduled to transit in Hawaii on the return leg of his trip,
and will return to Taiwan on July 6th.

The Executive Yuan has approved the merger of Tainan City and County into a
single municipality.

The move comes a week after the Ministry of Interior approved the upgrade of
Taipei County to a municipal city and the mergers of Taichung and Gaoxiong
cities and counties into special municipalities,

The decision to allow Tainan city and county to merge was based on the belief
that the move will push the development of Jiayi and Yunlin counties.

The move paves the way for the establishment of President Ma Ying-jeou's move
to re-map the country into three metropolises and 15 counties and cities.

Ma's plan is aimed at reducing regional disparities between northern and
southern Taiwan.

Ousted Honduran President Manuel Zelaya says he will travel back to Honduras
on Thursday, in defiance of an army coup at the weekend that sent him into
exile.

Honduras is coming under pressure to reinstate Zelaya ... as many Latin
American leaders agreed to withdraw envoys from the country.

Zelaya, a leftist, was detained and sent into exile in a dispute over his
push to extend presidential terms.

The coup is Central America's biggest political crisis since the U.S.
invasion of Panama in 1989.

Iran has confirmed Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as president and says a dispute over
his June 12 re-election is over.

However, supporters of opposition Mirhossein Mousavi are still saying that
election was rigged.

Riot police have beefed up their presence in the capital Tehran ... but there
were no signs of major unrest late on Monday.

Mass protests erupted when Ahmadinejad was first declared the winner of the
June 12th vote.

20 people died in that violence during the unrest.

The poll and its violent aftermath have exposed splits in Iran's political
establishment and plunged the country into its deepest crisis since the 1979
Islamic Revolution.
